you know, I was crossing the Gowanus once,, looked down, and I swore I could see the back end of a car through the murk. That must be the single most polluted body of water I've ever seen.

(Guerrilla marketing for a friend's recently-published first novel)

"That same afternoon, in a rare and impulsive burst of activity, I took the L train out to the Gowanus Canal, but I couldn't concentrate. The rotting dock pilings, the pair of orange sneakers abandoned on the muddy banks, the broken fishing rod, a used condom--useless details were all I noticed, and they drew me back into the realization I'd been dodging all day: nothing I could write would ever change anything in Brooklyn."

OK, Keith, we know your hatred of the G train, but the L doesn't go anywhere near the Gowanus.
